Job Safety and Environmental Analysis and Procedure Development
-
Target Audience
Any person involved in controlling workplace hazards, designing and developing Standard/Safe Operating Procedures (SOP's) or Work Method Statements (WMS), and or structured training courses based on identified competencies required to perform specific jobs in the workplace should attend this course.
-
Aim
The aim of the course is to familiarise participants with the skills, knowledge and processes involved in conducting a Job Safety and Environmental Analysis (JSEA), identifying, assessing and controlling hazards; and developing Operating Procedures on the most hazardous job(s) associated with the participants' occupation.
-
Performance Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the linkage between the Work Health and Safety Act and associated Legislation;
- Identify the jobs associated with individual occupations at the workplace and conduct a Job Safety and Environmental Analysis (JSEA);
- List all hazards identified in the JSEA, assess identified hazards for risk and based upon the risk analysis use the Hierarchy of Control to develop strategies to reduce the risk of hazards identified;
- Document the SOP/WMS associated with the JSEA;
- List the competencies required to perform the tasks associated with the jobs within the occupations in the workplace; and
- Include the listed competencies in the development of training curriculum consistent with appropriate Standard Operating Procedures
-
Course Outline
- Systems Overview
- Conducting the Job Safety Analysis
- Hazard Identification
- Risk Assessment
- Hazard Control
- Documenting the Standard Operating Procedures/Work Method Statement
- Review
-
Methodology
The course delivery is consistent with adult learning principals, viz:
- Multimedia presentations;
- Reference materials and workbooks as required;
- Brainstorming sessions and group dynamics;
- Discussion and consensus; and
- Facilitation of theoretical and or experiential learning.
-
Time-Frame
The course is designed to be completed within a one-day time frame. Each day would consist of at least eight (8) hours not including breaks and lunch times.
-
Expected Workplace Outcomes
Participants will be able to increase performance and productivity; and reduce the exposure to risk, to themselves and others in the workplace utilising the knowledge and skills learnt, specifically by:
- applying the process of Job Safety and Environmental Analysis to jobs performed in the workplace commensurate with the capacity in which personnel are employed and the functions performed, and utilise this process in the development of SOPs/WMSs;
- determining the requisite competencies required for specific jobs; and
- ensuring specific training modules are based upon the identified competencies.
NB: We recommend modification of all courses to include client specific content, ie: terminology, process, documentation as required, etc.
